1006_TenSpeed_Hello Jello_GBMen_1338a

Two words: Cute and cute. (My favorite is the guy on the top right with the beady eyes and green star buttons!) Liven up Christmas this year with some jiggly, jello-y, gingerbread men, and women. Flavored with molasses, cinnamon, and nutmeg with a creamy base of sweetened condensed milk, these little ginger-jello people are as fun to decorate as they are to eat. This recipe and many more can be found in my book, Hello Jell-O! So if you like it, buy my book… and have a Merry Christmas!

Apple Pie ala Mode Jello Shots

Apple Pie Jello Shots
Whomever came up with the idea to put cold ice cream over warm pie was one smart cookie. So its only fitting that I pay homage this culinary pairing with boozy, bite-sized, versions of the real deal. These super cute jello shots in tiny pie crusts are made with spiced apple juice, vodka, and topped with mini scoops of jiggly vanilla ice cream. This recipe would also work with whiskey or some of that homemade apple pie moonshine. These jello shots were served at a Memorial Day rooftop BBQ but, as American as Apple Pie, they would also make a festive 4th of July summer treat.

Shamrock Shake Shots

Shamrock Shake Shots

DIY Shamrock Shake recipes are making the rounds on the foodie-interwebs this Saint Patrick’s Day season. And what could be better than NOT going to McDonald’s and instead making your own minty green treat at home?? Making your own minty green treat at home, adding some booze and gelatin to the mix, and turning out some amazing jello shots! Vanilla ice cream, milk, a hint of mint, and whisky make these shamrock shaped shots (say that 3 times fast) special. Not into whisky? Vodka will do, as will peppermint schnapps (leave out the mint extract). Go nuts, and have a happy St. Patrick’s day!

Star Spangled Shooters

It’s summer! The arrival of the warm weather coincided perfectly with the first official day of summer and that means Fourth of July celebrations are right around the corner. For this year’s rooftop BBQ and fireworks display I made festive Star Spangled jello shooters. Vodka or rum liven up mini jello stars layered with blueberry, vanilla ice cream, and fun sprinkles! Have a happy 4th!

Coquito

Inspired by Margarita, my Puerto Rican con-worker (at my non-jello day job), and her annual holiday offering of Coquito, Puerto Rico’s version of eggnog, I made a Coquito Jello for this year’s office holiday party. Loaded to the gills with rum (at least the way Margarita makes it) it has a creamy base of coconut milk and sweetened condensed milk and is spiced with cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice. Intoxicatingly delicious!  See the recipe below and have a Merry Christmas!

With homemade Nutella buttercream frosting!

This year for Victor‘s birthday I wanted to make something extra special. I have made Jello Poke Cake in the past but wanted to trying something that would be easier to serve to a dozen friends out for a birthday brunch in the neighborhood. These vanilla cupcakes are special because they have stripes of strawberry rum jello inside. They are topped with an icing made with a blend of butter, sugar, and everyone’s favorite Nutella (an entire jar!). These were a sell-out hit at Victor’s brunch, everyone had two. Happy Birthday Victor!

I love cheesecake! But with the heatwave we experienced this summer who wants to slave away over a hot oven. The beauty of this cheesecake, made with cream cheese and sour cream, is no baking! It is rounded out with a strawberry gelatin topping and a cookie crust.

I wanted to make something very warm and fall-like for Thanksgiving this year. I found a maple leaf shaped baking pan and thought that maple gelatin would be the perfect fit. To balance the sweetness of the gelatinous pure maple topping, I used creamy almond flavored Dofu Delight gelatin as a base with a little brown sugar and vanilla added.  Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

For Labor Day weekend I made this refreshing treat perfect for that end-of-summer BBQ. It is made with a layer of cool vanilla ice cream, topped with a layer of minty watermelon and rum. Yum! Party guests devoured it with delight. This recipe will be included in my new book due out February 2012. Happy Labor Day!

Get Well Jello (Godiva Chocolate & Cherries)

This jello mold was created especially for my friend Angeli who suffered an unfortunate climbing wall accident resulting in even more unfortunate knee surgery resulting in her being couch-ridden and hopped on pain pills for several weeks.  This black cherry topped jello mold is made with D’gari brand vanilla gelatin prepared with milk. In the mix is an added bonus of nearly an entire bottle Godiva chocolate liqueur (minus whatever I chugged while preparing it). This rich and indulgent dessert was made with the intention of completely making up for the fact that her entire summer was ruined by an ill-timed sports injury.  Hope you are back on your feet soon Angeli!

Year of the Rabbit

This year the Chinese New Year, a very important traditional Chinese holiday, begins on February 3th.  In New York’s Chinatown the festivities carry on for weeks with the neighborhood adorned in red lanterns, lions and dragons parading through the streets, and fire crackers exploding with confetti. According the the Chinese Zodiac, this beings the Year of the Rabbit. And so, to honor the occasion, I made this white rabbit with anise gelatin and vanilla ice cream, which will be served at new year/birthday party this weekend.

Vegan Vanilla Clementine Panna Cotta

I have had several inquires into vegan jello alternatives so I have been experimenting with Agar Agar, a flavorless, orderless, seaweed derived ‘gelatin’.  My mother gave me this tiny mold for Christmas and I thought it would be perfect for this recipe made with vanilla soy yogurt and clementine zest.  A creamy, delicate flavor that even an unrefined, carnivorous palate (my father’s) could appreciate as he devoured the whole thing. This recipe will be included in my new book, but I have included it here as well so you can try it now. Have a Happy New Year everyone!

This jello is another in the series of ice cream flavored treats.  This one was made for Sarah‘s BBQ and housewarming party for her new Brooklyn abode with a much coveted yard. Its made with vanilla bean ice cream and sweetened condensed milk.  Its crowned with mini Oreo cookies and crust of crushed Oreos.  A cool and creamy compliment to a very hot summer.

Jello Newtown Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant

Purple Digester Eggs For my entry in the year’s Gowanus Studio Space Jell-O Mold Competition I made this jello and plastic replica of the Newtown Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant. A striking piece of engineering and architecture located a mere 500 yards from my apartment. The facility has been a point of interest for me since moving in to my neighborhood and a frequent photographic subject. I used 1 liter bottles to mold the gelatin “digester eggs” flavored with raspberry and french vanilla and used food die to mimic the color of the eggs lit at night. Super bright LED lights were used to illuminate the jello from behind. I competed against many wonderful and creative entries and sadly did not win. However, since being inspired by the architectural jellos of Liz Hickock and Bompas and Parr, this is a project I’ve wanted to take on for a while and am very happy with the finished product.  Congratulation to all the winners of the competition!

Photos of the event will be posted on the GSS website this week, but in the meantime Eater covered the event and Gothamist gave me some love. I wasn’t able to be at the actual competition since I was out-of-town so a very special thank you to Starr and Art for representing me! And thank you to Marie for helping me construct the catwalks for the model.
