You might be surprised to learn that The Jello Mold Mistress has a day-job. As much as I wish I could make jello full time, it doesn’t fully support
my fancy lifestyle the high cost-of-living in Brooklyn. That said, I just landed a new day-job that I am very exciting about which means that jello has take a backseat for the past couple of weeks. But, with the holidays coming up, I wanted to take the time to post more stuff! This recipe can be found in my book Hello Jell-O!. It’s an autumn inspired jello that mixes carrots and cream cheese with the warm flavors of vanilla and cinnamon and would make a great addition to the Thanksgiving dessert table. Summer is NOT over yet! I don’t know about where you are, but here in Brooklyn its still 85 degrees (for an hour or two in the middle of the day). So cool off on a “hot” day with slices of pink lemonade. Made in a lemon rinds with cherry soda, pink lemonade, and couple of shots of vodka, these jello shots are sure to quench your thirst… or at least give you a little buzz. I’m at that age. The age where its time to start saying goodbye to good friends and fun buddies as they take the next step into our delayed adulthood and flee the big city in search of backyards and better school districts… Yup, that’s right. The suburbs. While I plan on staying an urbanite and living in a tiny, overpriced apartment forever, I recently celebrated the departure of some very good friends as they said goodbye to the Big Apple and hello to a four-bedroom brick colonial in a land far, far away. West Orange, New Jersey. Served at a BBQ in their honor, Bye Bye Big Apple jello shots are shaped like tiny apples and made with bourbon, sour apple liqueur and cranberry juice.

Summer in the city can be brutal. August has brought with it a stifling heat wave that has lasted for weeks driving everyone, myself included, out of Brooklyn and onto the beach. Escape the heat with Blood Orange Margarita jello shots. Tricolor cookies, Napoleon cookies, seven layer cookies, Italian flag cookies… regardless of what you call them, the almond flavored, chocolate covered, sponge cake squares I refer to as Rainbow Cookies are one of my very favorites (along with the Black & White Cookie and my mother’s chocolate chip). So, for a recent spring brunch party I decided to make my own jello shot versions. Pink, white and green layers of almond flavored sweetened condensed milk spiked with cake flavored vodka and topped with creamy, gelatinized chocolate liquor were as good as the real thing… and better if you consider that they were laden with booze!
Two words: Cute and cute. (My favorite is the guy on the top right with the beady eyes and green star buttons!) Liven up Christmas this year with some jiggly, jello-y, gingerbread men, and women. Flavored with molasses, cinnamon, and nutmeg with a creamy base of sweetened condensed milk, these little ginger-jello people are as fun to decorate as they are to eat. My sister gave me this Frozen Smiles ice cube tray a year or two ago and I’ve been meaning to give it a try. These jello dentures came out so well I almost didn’t post them because I thought they looked a little too real. But I decided their ghastly smile would make a fun and kinda ghoulish treat for a Halloween party that both kids and adults alike would find amusing. Enjoy and have a Happy Halloween!
Summer is waning (a fact which I am in complete denial about) but it’s not too late to squeeze in some summer-time activities such as lounging poolside while enjoying a giant, gelatinized Peach Bellini. Its been a while since I’ve made a large jello mold so for this year’s annual pool party with co-workers on Long Island, I decided to make this 5 pound Bellini in lieu of tiny jello shots. Fresh peaches and lots of bubbles are suspended in most of a bottle of peach schnapps and champagne making this a light, refreshing, and intoxicating treat.
Its hot. Its summer. Its National Tequila Day! (This Thursday July 24th to be specific). In my world, this means pretending to be poolside while sunbathing on my roof and knocking back some bright and sunny Tequila Sunrise Jello Shots!!! With all of goodness of the cocktail by the same name, its filled with gradient layers of OJ (that means you have these shots for breakfast), grenadine and loads of tequila. Enjoy the sunshine!

Contrary to popular belief, German chocolate cake did not originate in Germany, but was named for the American baking chocolate inventor Sam German. That, however, did not stop me from making these German Chocolate Cake pudding shots for a recent German themed birthday party at a German beer hall. Layered with chocolate pudding infused with cake flavor vodka and butterscotch pudding infused with rum and topped with shredded coconut, these pudding shots were erstaunlich lecker!
Cinnamon flavored whisky is all the rage at the moment and its my friend Katharine’s favorite bottle to bring to a party. So when she threw an end-of-winter party, I had to bring some Fireball Shots of my own… jello style! Akin to the Atomic Fireball candy we all chipped a tooth on as a kid, this jigglier, boozier version is all whisky and ginger ale. They were a smash hit at Katharine’s party and a fiery way to usher out the winter and welcome warmer weather. Happy Spring everyone!
DIY Shamrock Shake recipes are making the rounds on the foodie-interwebs this Saint Patrick’s Day season. And what could be better than NOT going to McDonald’s and instead making your own minty green treat at home?? Making your own minty green treat at home, adding some booze and gelatin to the mix, and turning out some amazing jello shots! Vanilla ice cream, milk, a hint of mint, and whisky make these shamrock shaped shots (say that 3 times fast) special. Not into whisky? Vodka will do, as will peppermint schnapps (leave out the mint extract). Go nuts, and have a happy St. Patrick’s day!
