A couple of years ago for the Chinese New Year I made a Year of the Rabbit jello. According the the Chinese Zodiac, this year begins the Year of the Snake. I don’t have a snake mold so I used this goldfish mold to symbolize surplus in the new year. I made a traditional Chinese dessert recipe of almond gelatin and mandarin oranges with a red cherry eyeball. The red symbolizes good luck. The Year of the Snake begins on February 10th and if you are like me and you were born in 1965, 1977, 1989, or 2001 this is your year!

The summer sun has officially risen over Brooklyn and this Memorial Day weekend was a scorcher (which meant I got in some much needed beach and biking time). To celebrate the holiday weekend and the love of the sun I made this Tequila Sunrise jello which was served at a backyard BBQ. Its gradient layers are made with real orange juice, silver tequila, and grenadine with cherries. It was delicious. Happy summer everyone!

Inspired by the colorfully creative and talented Katie Sokoler and her blog Color Me Katie I decided to make a super bright and shiny Color Me Jello. And since it was Katie’s birthday and since she lives in my neighborhood, I decided I’d just pop by and present it to her. Tickled, she took some fun photos of me and my jello. For this jello I followed the Rainbow Mold recipe but added an extra top layer of suspended strawberries. Thanks for the wonderful photo Katie!

To celebrate the dual birthdays of Laura and Chris this weekend, I decided to experiment with a liquor haven’t tried using before, gin. I mixed it with a little triple sec and ginger ale to sweeten it up and suspend mandarin oranges throughout. The result is a zingy, citrusy jello mold that will definitely give you a little buzz and put you in a birthday celebrating mood. Happy Birthday Laura and Chris!

My sister Kateri sent me this recipe book some time ago and I have been meaning to try a recipe from it. The New Joys of Jell-O, a 1973 follow-up to the original 1960′s Joys of Jell-O, takes jello from the suburbs to the city and features photographs of sophisticated, swinging, singles in a posh Manhattan penthouse feasting on a dizzying array of jello selections… Seems about right.
I selected the Strawberries Romanoff recipe but substituted cherries for strawberries because I wanted to use this cherry themed mold Flossie gave me for Christmas. It has a top layer of cherry whipped cream with a touch of brandy and bottom layer of sweet dark cherries suspended in cherry gelatin. Rusty gave me this wonderful candy/mini jello mold for my birthday back in November. And at some point Janejai sent me an inspirational email with colorful photos of homemade gum drops in wintery flavors. I put two and two together and turned out a whole bunch of these little gum drops for my holiday party I hosted over the weekend. Made in mint, cinnamon, and orange flavors and rolled in sweet sugar, the cinnamon was my favorite. These were a huge hit and really simple to make. Have a Happy Holiday!

Fall is setting in in Brooklyn and with it come the fall-time jellos. This one is a remake of the Orange Spice Jello with a middle layer of orange gelatin, peaches, and rum, spiced with cloves, cinnamon, and the zing of vinegar. In addition, it has a top and bottom layer of sweetened condensed milk flavored with peach syrup and a touch of cinnamon. This jello was made for a going away party for my dear friend John who is off to the deep south to return to school. Good luck John! I miss you already!

Inspired by my friend Sydney‘s yearly holiday party tradition of brewing up some yummy hot wassail punch, spiked with dark rum, comes this cold, gelatinous version of the delicious treat. Its made with apple and cranberry juice, slow simmered with allspice, cloves and an orange. Of course rum is added before it goes in the fridge for cooling and solidifying. This jello mold will be served up at Syd’s holiday party this week and I look forward to seeing how it stands up to its liquid counterpart. This holiday recipe is another that will appear in my forthcoming book.

For the last in a series of Halloween jellos made for Kitchen Daily, I made these tropical fruit flavored versions of everyone’s favorite Halloween treat, Candy Corns. I used sweetened condensed milk, with orange and pineapple flavored gelatin. A second, larger version of this jello mold was created for this weekend’s festivities, only with the added bonus of rum! Jello Marzipan

This recipe came from the classic Joys of Jell-O recipe book and boasts a new way to make the old fashioned confection. These strawberry, cherry, orange, and banana shaped candies are molded from ground coconut and almonds and are flavored with the corresponding fruit flavored gelatin. Whole cloves and mint leaves put the finishing touches on these tiny fruits. While the taste of the finished product bears little resemblance to actual Marzipan, they are sweet and yummy, especially if you like coconut, and were very fun to make.
Lobster Jello

My sister Kateri sent me this Lobster mold and I wanted to use it right away so I made a lobster jello for yet another Scorpio birthday, Jacob’s. This orange jello lobster with pistachio D’gari jello base is actually a remake of the original jello made for the party that did not turn out looking quite as expected.

In addition to Jacob’s birthday, the party was also to celebrate Hoover’s one year anniversary of living in our Brooklyn neighborhood of Greenpoint. To commemorate the occasion I made him these little green points of pineapple jello died green with vodka and topped with sweetened condensed milk.

To celebrate my own Scorpio birthday this year I threw a Jello Party. I made my first savory jello for the occasion of chive cream cheese, cottage cheese, sour cream, and Worcestershire sauce. I also created an array of liquor filled mini jellos in such flavors as peach, mango, gooseberry, and mojito, all with either rum or vodka. In addition I made a pistachio dessert jello with whipped topping. I was introduced to D’Gari gelatin mixes which come in a variety of exotic flavors (like Walnut, Coconut, Chocolate, and Eggnog) and are made with either water or milk. I used these to make most of the jello minis and the pistachio jello.
