Margarita Jello Cactus

Spring is just now starting to show itself here in Brooklyn and Cinco de Mayo is just around the corner. Celebrate this holiday of Mexican heritage and pride with some little cactus shaped margarita jello shots. These are made with silver tequila, triple sec, and lime juice, and are garnished with a little Twizzler cactus bloom. These jello shots will be enjoyed this weekend at a Cinco de Mayo rooftop party.

Watermelon is the perfect compliment to summer and this sweet and tangy jello mold delivers on refreshing summer flavor. Reminiscent of the watermelon Italian ices you remember from the ice cream truck or the pool snack bar as a kid but with an adult twist. It is made with fresh watermelon and tart lime juice with a little splash of vodka for an extra kick. I wrote this recipe especially for the Cooking Channel where you can find the recipe complete with process photos.

Jalapeño Margarita

For Cinco de Mayo this year I wanted to make something sweet but also a little spicy. This cocktail inspired jello is made with homemade jalapeño infused tequila, lime juice, and triple sec. The tangy flavor packs a hot punch. It will be served this weekend at Sarah’s housewarming “Sarah de Mayo” rooftop party. Have a safe and Happy Cinco de Mayo!

Inspired by the colorfully creative and talented Katie Sokoler and her blog Color Me Katie I decided to make a super bright and shiny Color Me Jello. And since it was Katie’s birthday and since she lives in my neighborhood, I decided I’d just pop by and present it to her. Tickled, she took some fun photos of me and my jello. For this jello I followed the Rainbow Mold recipe but added an extra top layer of suspended strawberries. Thanks for the wonderful photo Katie!

Movember Jello

Movember is an annual, month-long event involving the growing of moustaches during the month of November to raise awareness of men’s health issues. My friend Ronan asked me to make a moustache jello to promote his Mo Space page where he is campaigning for the cause.  I found this mold on Etsy and prepared it with lime gelatin and black food dye.  Good luck with your fund-raising Ronan and happy mo-growing guys!

How-Tuesday: Raspberry Jello Cosmo

I was very excited a few weeks ago when Etsy invited me to participate in their How-Tuesday video series to demonstrate my jello making skills. For the video made a Raspberry Cosmo jello mold which I served at my friend Claire‘s annual birthday brunch. The mold is made with cranberry juice, triple sec, vodka, and lime juice with raspberries suspend throughout. For my friends’ housewarming/ engagement party I wanted to create one the of vintage recipes from the Joys of Jell-O recipe book.  I don’t know what it is about the Under-the-Sea Salad that screams domestic bliss (perhaps because its name is reminiscent of a 50′s prom theme), but I decided that this recipe was both housewarming party and summer time appropriate.  Its is comprised of a bottom layer of pears suspended in cream cheese and an upper layer of gingery lime gelatin with a crown of pears. Congratulations to Janejai and Conor on your newfound domestication!

Jello Nest Eggs

Whether you are planning for the future or just for this weekend’s Easter dinner, these little jello nest eggs would make the perfect dessert.   The eggs are made from lime, cherry, and blueberry gelatin mixed with sweetened condensed milk. And the nests are made from melted white chocolate chips and toasted coconut molded into foiling baking cups. To mold the eggs, I drilled holes in the top of mini plastic Easter eggs through which I poured the jello and taped up the seams until it was time to hatch… I mean, unmold. Have a Happy Easter!

Cafe Freeze

My mother gave me this fabulous cocktail recipe book circa 1979 featuring the house cocktails of nation’s most popular restaurants of the day. I’ve been wanting to make a cocktail inspired jello from this book for a while , and with a ton of rum on hand, I chose the Cafe Freeze. This cocktail hails from Chicago’s once great art deco eartey Arnie’s and is made with rum, tangy lime sherbet, pineapple gelatin, and garnished with lime slices. It was enjoyed at a basketball party over the weekend. (Go VCU!)

Petite Watermelons

With the passing of the Labor Day weekend and summer drawing to an end, I made these mini watermelons to commemorate the occasion. Made with lime rinds, strawberries, and vodka with little black sesame seeds, these make fun little “jello shots”.  I have seen versions of this all over the web, most recently and notably on another jello blog called My Jello Americans. This is just one of an amazing array of tiny “jello shots” from the creators of that blog made with their own infused liquors in fun, creative shapes. Better than green beer and just in time for St Patrick’s day I made this fun, green jello. The bottom layer is lime with vodka and the top layer clear gelatin with lime green maraschino cherries suspended throughout.  Happy Wednesday everyone!

Stained Glass Jello Prep

Laura (aka Lil Mama) brought this recipe to my attention. Its is constructed of blocks of strawberry, lime, and blueberry Jello suspended in a mixture of Knox and what I consider to be God’s gift to gelatin: sweetened condensed milk.  MmmMmm!

Expect more sweetened condensed milk jellos because its really very amazing.

This was a hit at Hoover’s BBQ. Its top layer is lime jello with vodka and blueberries and the bottom layer is tonic and Cool Whip. So far I’ve been using household items as jello molds, this being a Gladware container, but my first real jello mold is on order.
